Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) and Van Nuys Airport (VNY) have achieved significant milestones in sustainability by reaching Level 4 carbon accreditation. This recognition comes as part of the Airport Carbon Accreditation (ACA) program, which evaluates and acknowledges airports for their carbon management practices. Level 4 indicates progress in measuring and reducing carbon emissions from both airport authorities and third parties operating on-site.

John Ackerman, CEO of Los Angeles World Airports, stated, "Airport carbon accreditation highlights LAWA's commitment to building a sustainable future, while maintaining safe and efficient operations." He also emphasized that LAX is one of only six commercial airports in the U.S. to achieve Level 4 or higher, while VNY is the sole general aviation airport in the Americas to reach this level.

LAX reached Level 4 alongside only three other commercial U.S. airports, having been initially accredited at "Level 2 – Reduction" in 2016 and advancing to "Level 3 – Optimization" in 2017. Meanwhile, VNY became one of the first general aviation airports globally to earn accreditation, having first been certified at Level 2 in 2017.

The efforts to cut carbon emissions are part of LAWA's long-term environmental goals for 2045: eliminating the use of non-renewable electricity, ceasing to use potable water for non-potable needs, and achieving carbon neutrality in airport operations.

Over the past few years, several advancements have been made. At LAX, there was a 26-percent reduction in energy consumption per passenger by 2023 compared to 2011, beating LAWA's 2025 goal by two years. The LAX Electric Ground Support Equipment Incentive Program was approved in 2024, facilitating the acquisition of zero-emission equipment to further cut emissions. Additionally, LAX's electric vehicle charger count grew to 1,261 as of 2024, and several structures gained LEED certification for their energy and environmental designs.

At VNY, greenhouse gas emissions per aircraft operation were cut by 7% from 2022 and 31% from 2011. A shift towards renewable energy sources has helped achieve this reduction. The airport also saw a significant increase in the delivery of Sustainable/Synthetic Aviation Fuel and unleaded aviation gas between 2023 and 2024.

Further details on LAWA’s sustainability efforts can be found at their official site.
