Argentina's General Confederation of Labour (CGT), the country's largest labor federation, has announced a mass mobilization to defend pensioners' rights amid widespread protests against the austerity policies of President Javier Milei's administration. The strike, conducted nationwide on Wednesday, has been supported by the Argentine affiliates of UNI Global Union, who are asking for fair wages, pension protections, and the return of collective bargaining rights.

Héctor Daer, President of UNI Americas, expressed support for retired workers, stating, "We will support the just demands of retired workers, reaffirming our commitment to those who dedicated their lives to the progress of our country. From the CGT, we envision a nation built on development and decent work."

Since his inauguration in December, President Milei has pursued an intense economic restructuring aimed at reducing public expenditure. Although the administration views these measures as steps towards fiscal balance, critics argue that they disproportionately affect working families and retirees.

Trade union leaders contend that the austerity measures, which have received approval from international financial institutions, have led to decreased incomes and public services, while banks and corporations report increasing profits.

Marcio Monzane, Regional Secretary of UNI Americas, commented on the situation: “What we are witnessing in Argentina is not just a national crisis – it is a warning for the entire region. When a government abandons its social commitments in the name of market dogma, it is workers who pay the price. At UNI, we stand shoulder to shoulder with the Argentinian people in defense of democracy, dignity, and the rights of all.”

In recent months, social unrest has grown in Argentina, with unions condemning what they see as undue repression of protests and the erosion of democratic achievements. The CGT has outlined a Plan of Action that calls for ending repressive measures, safeguarding free collective bargaining, and providing urgent assistance to pensioners who face increasing costs and reduced benefits.

UNI Global Union has declared its complete solidarity with Argentine workers and pensioners, emphasizing that the defense of dignity, democracy, and social justice is fundamental to the global labor movement.
