Air India has announced the launch of the DigiYatra platform for contactless travel on domestic flights from 17 Indian airports. The announcement was made in a post on X on April 13.

According to the Ministry of Civil Aviation, DigiYatra is a government-backed initiative designed to digitize the airport experience in India using facial recognition technology for a seamless, contactless journey. Passengers register on the DigiYatra mobile app and link their travel credentials with a facial biometric ID to access entry, security, and boarding gates. This system is part of India’s broader effort to modernize its aviation infrastructure and enhance passenger convenience.

Air India's announcement highlights that passengers can now use DigiYatra services at 17 Indian airports, including major hubs like Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, and Kolkata. According to the Airports Authority of India, the DigiYatra system enables a faster, paperless journey by reducing queues and wait times across terminals. As of early 2024, DigiYatra had over 5 million registered users nationwide, reflecting growing adoption among domestic travelers.

As reported by the Financial Times, DigiYatra ensures privacy by storing a passenger’s credentials on their mobile device rather than on centralized government servers. The system shares data only with the airport’s infrastructure and deletes it within 24 hours after travel, ensuring compliance with data protection standards. The platform’s decentralized architecture and convenience have led to increased usage across major Indian airports.

Air India, India’s national airline, was founded in 1932 and is currently owned by the Tata Group. Headquartered in New Delhi, the airline operates an extensive domestic and international network covering routes across Asia, North America, Europe, and the Middle East. Under Tata's leadership, Air India is undergoing a multi-year transformation that includes fleet modernization, digital upgrades, and enhancements to customer service.
