Air Astana has announced a delay in its plans to launch flights to the United States due to delivery setbacks from Boeing. The Kazakh airline, which ordered three Boeing 787-9 aircraft from Air Lease Corporation (ALC), expected delivery by the first half of 2025. However, Boeing has postponed the first delivery until mid-2026, postponing Air Astana's expansion plans.

Peter Foster, CEO of Air Astana, told Forbes Kazakhstan, "Boeing delayed the first delivery of the airline’s first Boeing 787-9 aircraft to at least mid-2026." Despite the delay, Foster expressed optimism, stating, "My personal opinion is that Boeing is already getting into shape. There have been changes made there, and I see them as positive."

It remains unclear which US destinations Air Astana intends to service, as there have been no applications with the Department of Transportation for direct route approvals. Data from aviation analytics company Cirium reveals that there have been no direct or one-stop flights from Kazakhstan to the US since 2000.

Efforts to establish direct flights are ongoing. On January 23, 2024, Kazakhstan's Ministry of Transport announced that the Aviation Administration of Kazakhstan was collaborating with the US Federal Aviation Administration for this purpose. Air Astana awaits an FAA audit once its Boeing 787 delivery is secured.

In July 2024, Kazakhstan's government, led by Digital Development Minister Jaslan Mädiev, discussed Boeing's aircraft production and the delays affecting local carriers during a meeting with Boeing representatives. Initially, deliveries were expected to start in late 2025, indicating further delays since the original timeline.

In addition to Air Astana, SCAT Airlines has also expanded its Boeing fleet, ordering seven 737 MAX 8 aircraft during the Dubai Airshow in November 2023.

Air Astana's initial order for 787 aircraft dates back to March 2012, which included four 767-300ER and three 787-8 planes. However, only the 767-300ERs were delivered between 2013 and 2014. In November 2022, Air Astana secured a lease agreement with ALC for three 787-9 aircraft, set to modernize its fleet and enhance its route expansion.

Steven Udvar-Házy, Executive Chairman of ALC, commented, "The aircraft lessor was pleased to place three 787-9s with Air Astana, greatly enhancing the airline's long-range network capabilities."
