Cyberattacks targeting airports are increasing, presenting a significant threat to critical infrastructure essential for public safety, national security, and economic stability. Attacks can compromise systems such as air traffic control and communications, potentially leading to accidents. According to Ibrahim Memis, Head of Cybersecurity at BEUMER Group, "Cyber threats are becoming increasingly prevalent due to the need for global connectivity and the shift towards a more digitalized world."

Sensitive data, including passenger and employee information, is at risk during such cyberattacks. Hackers exploiting these vulnerabilities can also cause cascading disruptions across interconnected airport systems like baggage handling and flight information displays.

Recent high-profile incidents include an attack on Port of Seattle on August 24, 2024, affecting 90,000 passengers' data. While no payment systems were compromised, the port is providing affected individuals with free credit monitoring. In March 2023, Kuala Lumpur International Airport faced a $10 million ransomware attack, resulting in significant service disruptions. Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim rejected the ransom, stating, "I didn't wait five seconds and immediately answered, 'No!'."

Critical infrastructure, including airports, is a common target for cybercriminals due to its impact on broader societal functions. Cyberattacks can exploit outdated systems, causing extensive delays and economic damage. Airports must prioritize cybersecurity measures to safeguard their operations and maintain public trust.

Airports handle sensitive data, from passenger information to cargo manifests, making them targets for cybercriminals. Strengthening cybersecurity remains crucial to prevent breaches that can degrade public trust and incur significant financial costs. As cyber threats evolve, airports are under pressure to bolster their defenses against future attacks.
