London Heathrow Airport released its operational data for March 2025, revealing a decrease in passenger traffic compared to the same month last year. Despite a challenging month marked by planned variations in holiday dates and an unexpected day-long closure due to a power outage, the airport managed to handle more than six million passengers.

The total number of travelers through Heathrow Airport last month was 6.22 million, reflecting a 7.5% decrease from March 2024. For the three-month period from January to March, the passenger count fell slightly to 18.25 million, a 1.5% drop. On an annual basis, however, the figures showed a positive trend, with 83.59 million passengers using the airport from April 2024 to March 2025, representing a 3.5% year-on-year increase.

Thomas Woldbye, the CEO of London Heathrow Airport, remarked on this performance: "It’s great to see strong demand to travel through Heathrow. Whilst passenger numbers were slightly down due to changing holidays this year, belly-hold cargo on passenger flights was a bright spot, growing 4% and underlining the importance of Heathrow as the UK’s gateway to growth. We are still on track to see another record year in 2025, and colleagues are working hard preparing for a busy Easter and May Bank Holiday getaway."

The power outage that occurred on March 21 led to significant disruptions. The airport was forced to cancel or divert over 1,300 flights, causing chaos as displaced aircraft eventually returned to their designated routes. Despite this setback, operations were able to resume partially on the same evening and ramped up over the following weekend.

Flight data for March, provided by aviation analytics company Cirium, showed that Heathrow's airlines scheduled nearly 40,000 flights, offering approximately 8.7 million seats. However, only 6.218 million passengers traveled through the airport, which affected the theoretical average load factor for the month.

Overall, the airport's March performance was influenced by various factors, including changes in holiday schedules and the unforeseen power issue. The management anticipates an increase in passenger numbers in April, with the airport gearing up for a busy Easter and May Bank Holiday.
