Cathay Cargo Terminal recently completed a trial of Autonomous Electric Tractor (AET) operations at Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA), marking a significant achievement in automated cargo logistics. The trial saw an electric tractor autonomously navigate from within the terminal to the West Cargo Apron (WCA), successfully transporting cargo to be loaded onto a Cathay Cargo flight.

The trial showcased a precise docking system, allowing seamless loading of Unit Load Devices (ULD). Security checks for the AET were conducted digitally to prevent lapses. This project was a collaboration between Cathay Cargo Terminal, the Airport Authority Hong Kong, and the autonomous technology firm, UISEE.

Cathay Cargo Terminal's Chief Operating Officer, Mark Watts, noted that this initiative reduces manual processes and improves operational efficiency, thus minimizing carbon emissions compared to traditional ground equipment. Watts highlighted that ongoing trials involve Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil (HVO) for their non-electric tractors, with industry data showing an 80-90% reduction in carbon emissions. He emphasized the continued push towards electrification for sustainability.

Airport Authority Hong Kong's Acting Deputy Director of Airport Operations, Wing Yeung, commented that this development showcases HKIA's commitment to smart logistics and sustainable growth, reinforcing its status as a global aviation leader.
