American Airlines is set to implement further changes to its boarding procedures starting next month. The Texas-based airline will introduce enhancements aimed at improving the experience for premium passengers.

The carrier disclosed that first and business class passengers will be allowed to pre-board from May 1, ahead of the busy summer travel period. According to an internal memo acquired by JonNYC, this preboarding privilege also extends to families with children under two, while ConciergeKey passengers and those needing special assistance will see no change in their boarding process.

The overall boarding procedure follows a tier system structured into nine groups, beginning with preboarding and then four priority groups for those holding higher AAdvantage tier statuses. The main cabin and basic economy passengers are assigned to the subsequent groups.

In addition to the changes in passenger grouping, American Airlines will increase the boarding time for its flights. Boarding for Airbus A319s and A320s will now begin 35 minutes before departure, while Boeing 737-800, MAX 8, A321, and A321neo will continue to board 40 minutes prior to takeoff. The boarding times for the 777-200ER, -300ER, and the 787-8 and -9 Dreamliners remain unchanged.

Fleet upgrades have also been updated, with the Airbus A319 retrofits now scheduled for fall this year. American Airlines aims to enhance their existing cabins, though the specific impact on A321T routes remains uncertain.

The airline also continues to roll out its new boarding technology, which it claims to lead the industry. Having expanded to over 100 airports, the technology aims to streamline the boarding process and reduce congestion at gates. American's aim is to utilize this system for 100% of its flights by year-end.

The introduction of these changes reflects American Airlines’ continued efforts to improve service for its customers, particularly for those flying in premium classes.
