Vueling | Wikipedia

Vueling, the Spanish airline and part of the International Airlines Group, is expanding its capacity on key routes connecting the United Kingdom to Spain. The low-cost carrier announced an increase in the number of flights to popular destinations in Spain, including Alicante, Barcelona, and Seville. Additionally, Vueling has introduced two new routes from London Heathrow Airport to Bilbao and Santiago de Compostela in Northern Spain.

According to Vueling, it plans to enrich its offerings by adding multiple new routes and increasing the frequency of existing ones. These adjustments include new connections from London Heathrow Airport to both Bilbao Airport and Santiago-Rosalía de Castro Airport. However, the airline will discontinue its services from London Gatwick Airport to Gran Canaria Airport and Granada Federico García Lorca Airport as of July.

Despite these removals, other airlines continue to offer flights from various London airports to Gran Canaria, filling the void left by Vueling. British Airways, easyJet, Jet2, Ryanair, and TUI will provide alternatives for travelers heading to the popular Canary Islands destination.

Vueling is responding to the travel demand from the UK to Spain by increasing frequency on routes such as Edinburgh to Barcelona, and London Gatwick to Alicante and Seville. Cirium’s Diio Mi data indicates the airline will add 19 weekly flights from Spain to the UK in July, providing an additional 3,183 weekly seats, marking a year-on-year increase of 10.6%. Enhanced routes also include Gatwick to Malaga and Alicante, Edinburgh to Barcelona, and a new service from Cardiff to Malaga.

A broader market trend shows that airlines are adding 207 weekly flights between the UK and Spain in July, a growth of 6.2%. Airlines, including Ryanair, easyJet, and Jet2, are significant contributors to this increase in capacity.

Spain remains the UK’s top travel destination, consistently attracting British tourists. In 2023, Spain welcomed 17.3 million visitors from the UK, making it the highest contributor in terms of both tourist numbers and expenditure.

Despite this interest, fewer Spanish nationals visited the UK, with only 2.2 million trips recorded in 2023, suggesting a limited reciprocal tourism flow between the two countries.
