Avelo Airlines entered the ultra-low-cost carrier market four years ago, and US Department of Transportation data shows it has transported 6.1 million round-trip passengers since its inception. In 2024 alone, Avelo carried 2.4 million passengers, achieving a 75% load factor across its routes. Over this period, Avelo operated more than 100 routes with varied load factors ranging from 20% to 86%.

Avelo, known for experimenting with new routes, has faced challenges such as low load factors on certain routes. Some routes saw loads as low as 20%, significantly below the airline's network average. "Seat load factors should not be considered in isolation," according to observations about market performance, especially for budget carriers with unusually low results.

Ten routes recorded the lowest load factors for Avelo in 2024. Notably, five of these involved Santa Rosa, a location added to Avelo's network in May 2021. Although Santa Rosa opened as a base in May 2024, it will close, with Avelo continuing to serve the area using non-based aircraft. Among the routes, "Santa Rosa to Tri-Cities (Pasco)" had the lowest load factor at 20%, followed by others including "Orlando to Mobile International" at 41% and "Santa Rosa to Salem" at 46%.

"As you can see, some entries started close to the end of 2024 or were only featured earlier in the year," which may have contributed to the low numbers, but irrespective of new or short-lived routes, persistent low loads signal the need for redeploying aircraft.

The carrier boasted a contrast with its highest load factor route from Tweed-New Haven to Atlanta, which filled 86% of available seats. Launched in May 2024, this route expanded from four weekly flights to daily services, contributing to its solid performance with 43,900 round-trip passengers last year.

Avelo operated flights to 61 airports in 2024, 20 of which achieved load factors of 75% or more. Atlanta ranked highest with 83%, influenced by the successful Tweed-New Haven route; however, it's noteworthy that the 83% was affected by two ended routes: Lakeland and Wilmington (DE) routes, both dragging down the overall figure. Atlanta, which joined Avelo's network in May 2024, accounted for 51,000 round-trip passengers, ranking as the 24th largest by traffic volume.

Avelo has been adjusting its operations, such as cutting all Tuesday flights in peak summer, to improve load and revenue per seat mile. The airline continues to explore various strategies to optimize its services.
