Idaho Falls Regional Airport announced the introduction of direct flights to Chicago O'Hare International Airport by American Airlines. Starting August 6, these services will be operated using CRJ700 aircraft. The flights will provide connections to East Coast destinations and others from one of the airline's major hubs.

At a press conference on April 16, city and airport officials shared details about the daily non-stop service. The flights are scheduled to run until November 1, marking the first new route for American Airlines from Idaho Falls since 2021. The midday schedule aims to facilitate connections for travelers heading east and beyond.

Mayor Rebecca Casper expressed enthusiasm about the new service, noting that summer is a peak travel season for the airport. Joe Hughes, Managing Director of Government Affairs at American Airlines, remarked on the convenience the new flights will offer, with quicker travel times to cities such as New York, Washington, DC, London, and Barcelona.

The seasonal service by American Airlines' CRJ700 will operate with departure from Idaho Falls at 12:30 PM, arriving in Chicago at 4:55 PM local time. The return flight from Chicago will leave at 9:45 AM, arriving at 12:00 PM in Idaho Falls.

Data from Cirium's Diio Mi airline planning tool highlights tight connections to subsequent destinations from Chicago. For example, on August 11, flights to San Diego, Cincinnati, and Columbus depart shortly after the Idaho Falls flight lands.

Overall, American Airlines has 79 departures scheduled from Chicago-O’Hare between 5:00 PM and 8:00 PM on August 11, which presents additional travel options for passengers.

Currently, Idaho Falls will offer 118 weekly departures to various U.S. destinations in August, including service by United Airlines, Allegiant Air, and Delta Air Lines, showing an increase in connectivity compared to February.

Idaho Falls is one of six primary commercial airports in Idaho, with Boise Airport being the only medium hub airport in the state. The data reflects the growth in passenger numbers since pre-pandemic levels in 2019.
