Frontier Airlines has introduced an initiative aimed at attracting customers who traditionally fly with Southwest Airlines. The Denver-based budget airline announced a program offering Southwest Rapid Rewards members the chance to upgrade to Frontier Miles Elite Gold status for 2025. This opportunity comes with a $40 fee and is available until April 30.

The promotion appears to target Southwest enthusiasts eyeing a switch after Southwest altered its "bags fly free" policy. By joining, participants can expect benefits not typical of budget carriers, such as a free carry-on bag, complimentary seat selection, and potential upgrades to a new Frontier first-class seating option expected to launch later this year.

To participate, Southwest Rapid Rewards members must register on frontier.getstatus.com using their Frontier Miles account details and pay the required fee. Once processed, the Elite Gold status should reflect within a day, valid through December 31.

Elite Gold is the second-tier status in Frontier's loyalty program, typically requiring 20,000 points. Benefits include earning 14 points per dollar, no change or cancellation fees, and additional perks. The airline also plans to offer first-class upgrades starting from this tier.

This push comes amid a period of financial adjustment for Frontier, as noted in its recent filing to the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission. The airline has faced reduced revenues and scaled back its schedule during the second quarter due to declining demand and fare reductions.
