Delta Air Lines' maintenance arm, Delta TechOps, has secured a new contract with UPS Airlines for service on its Pratt & Whitney PW2000 engines. Delta TechOps will provide support to UPS’s Boeing 757 freighters, all of which feature Pratt & Whitney PW2037 engines. The agreement integrates services into Delta’s existing maintenance framework, supporting UPS's operations headquartered in Atlanta.

Delta Air Lines operates as a full-service carrier with hubs across major U.S. airports, including Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, where Delta TechOps is based. The company's MRO division is a significant player in North America, catering to over 150 global aviation customers.

The deal with UPS Airlines is established as a 10-year integrated agreement. The cargo carrier operates a total of 75 Boeing 757-200 freighters, with an average service age of 31.7 years. Approximately half of the UPS fleet features power from the Pratt & Whitney PW2000 series, with the remainder powered by Rolls-Royce RB211 engines.

Delta TechOps specifically commits to maintenance of the Boeing 757 models equipped with PW2037 engines, despite UPS operating some aircraft with PW2040 engines. A social media announcement on LinkedIn by Delta TechOps states: "Delta TechOps is excited to announce a Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul (MRO) agreement with Atlanta-based UPS to service its Pratt & Whitney PW2037 engines."

The PW2000 engine, entering service in 1984, is notable for being the first to utilize Full-Authority Digital Electronic Control (FADEC) technology. Improvements introduced in 1994 included the Reduced Temperature Configuration (RTC), which offers greater reliability and reduced maintenance costs. It also boasts environmental efficiencies and is aligned with Boeing 757 use across various airlines.

The Boeing 757, widely used by UPS among other shipping giants like FedEx Express and DHL Aviation, is known for its efficiency in short- and medium-haul cargo roles. It’s particularly favored for its payload and operational range.

UPS Airlines has previously noted incidents in operations such as an MD-11 landing under challenging conditions after suspected lightning strikes. Such operational experience underscores the importance of reliable MRO agreements in maintaining fleet safety and efficiency.
