Empty leg flights present a cost-saving opportunity for those seeking private travel options at reduced rates. Often used for repositioning aircraft between airports, these flights offer potential savings of up to 90%, according to GlobeAir, a service providing information on such travel opportunities. While regular flights on private jets can be costly, deadhead flights, another term for empty leg journeys, allow travelers to enjoy considerable savings, ranging from 30-75%.

These flights occur when private jets travel without passengers, typically returning to their home base or moving to another location for a future flight. An empty leg flight might, for instance, occur if a jet travels from San Francisco to New York with passengers and then returns to San Francisco without them. To offset operational costs, owners sell seats at a lower price.

Several platforms provide information on available empty leg flights. These include GlobeAir, EvoJets, Jettly, VistaJet, and Vaunt. These services allow users to search for available empty leg flights that fit their schedule and route preferences. Notification systems ensure potential passengers can book promptly when flights appear.

Bookings through Vaunt follow a membership model and offer access to waitlists for these flights, although membership does not guarantee a seat. Using strategies like subscribing to platforms, staying flexible about destinations, and traveling in groups can improve chances of securing an empty leg flight. Familiarity with jet capacities is also advantageous when organizing group travel.

Empty leg flights provide several advantages, including the privacy benefits of private travel, flexible schedules, and access to exclusive airports. Private flights often offer a better passenger experience, including privacy for business communications. A survey by EvoJets reported increased productivity for business travelers using private flights.

However, there are various limitations to empty leg flights. Flights may be speculative initially, subject to the primary charter's confirmation. Additional fees might apply, cancellation policies can vary significantly, and aircraft might suffer maintenance issues. Travelers relying on such flights should be prepared for these challenges, especially during peak travel times.
