Ethiopian Airlines announced on X that it has suspended flights to Akanu Ibiam International Airport in Enugu until May 6 due to runway rehabilitation work.

The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) announced the closure of Akanu Ibiam International Airport in Enugu from April 22 to May 6, 2025, for urgent runway rehabilitation. FAAN said that the closure was necessary due to severe surface ruptures on the runway, which pose risks to aircraft operations. According to a report from The Nation, the temporary suspension aims to improve safety and preserve infrastructure integrity.

Air Peace, Nigeria’s leading domestic airline, announced an immediate suspension of flights to Enugu Airport following FAAN’s closure notice. According to PM News Nigeria, the airline cited prior disruptions caused by runway degradation, noting that aircraft operations had already been affected in the weeks leading up to the announcement. United Nigeria Airlines also confirmed its temporary withdrawal from Enugu routes and advised passengers to seek alternative travel arrangements.

Flights have been rerouted to nearby regional airports to mitigate the impact of the Enugu closure on passenger travel. According to Leadership News, airlines such as Air Peace and United Nigeria Airlines have redirected flights to Chinua Achebe Airport in Anambra and Asaba International Airport, providing contingency options to maintain connectivity. These measures are expected to remain in place until runway rehabilitation is completed on May 6 to minimize travel disruption.
