Air India promotes DigiYatra for seamless contactless domestic travel

Air India has announced on the social media platform X that it is promoting DigiYatra for contactless travel on domestic flights. This initiative aims to offer passengers a seamless, paperless journey across India's airports.

DigiYatra is a government-led initiative by India’s Ministry of Civil Aviation designed to provide a seamless, paperless airport experience through facial recognition technology. The system uses a single biometric token to validate a passenger's identity, travel, and health data, enabling contactless processing at various checkpoints. According to the DigiYatra Foundation, this approach aims to enhance security while reducing wait times and congestion at airports.

As of September 2024, DigiYatra is operational at 14 major airports across India, including Delhi, Mumbai, Hyderabad, Vijayawada, Kolkata, Varanasi, Bengaluru, Ahmedabad, Lucknow, Guwahati, Jaipur, Pune, Kochi, and Chennai. These airports handle a significant portion of India’s air traffic, facilitating broader adoption of contactless travel. The expansion reflects the government’s commitment to modernizing airport infrastructure and enhancing passenger convenience.

To use DigiYatra, passengers must download the DigiYatra app and register by linking their Aadhaar credentials via DigiLocker or directly using their Aadhaar number. The registration process involves capturing a clear selfie validated against Aadhaar data to create a biometric profile. This profile allows passengers to access various airport services without physical documents, streamlining check-in and boarding.

Air India is the flag carrier airline of India and is headquartered in Gurugram, Haryana. Founded in 1932 as Tata Airlines, it was nationalized in 1953 and later reacquired by Tata Sons in January 2022 through its subsidiary Talace Private Limited. The airline operates a fleet of 198 aircraft serving 92 domestic and international destinations and is a member of the Star Alliance network.
