Private jet travel has gained popularity since the pandemic, providing flexibility and convenience. With time saved at airports and luxurious comfort, flying privately appeals to business executives, celebrities, and wealthy individuals, especially in the United States, where business jets are common. However, private jet travel can be costly.

A typical flight from New York to Los Angeles, one of the most popular private jet routes, can start at approximately $40,000 for a one-way flight on a Cessna Citation Longitude or $50,000 for heavier jets like the Bombardier Challenger 604, as per Air Charter Advisors. Stratos Jets recommends the Bombardier Challenger 300 for this journey, estimating a price between $34,000 and $41,000 for a one-way trip.

Clay Lacy notes that a round trip from New York to Los Angeles on a Gulfstream G450 may be priced at $102,000, including the aircraft, crew, and fuel, but excluding positioning flight time, landing fees, federal excise taxes, or overnight fees.

The hourly charter rate for private jets can range from $3,500 to $18,000, varying based on the jet type and other factors. Traveling during peak times or holidays can increase costs due to factors like repositioning, landing fees, and fluctuating fuel prices.

For a super-mid-size jet from New York to Los Angeles, a one-way trip might cost $40,000, while a long-range jet could cost $75,000 to $90,000.

Private ownership is another option, albeit expensive. For instance, a pre-owned Gulfstream IV can cost around $3.2 million, with annual operating expenses around $1.67 million for 200 hours of flying. Alternatively, fractional ownership allows purchasing shares in an aircraft, while jet cards offer pre-paid flying hours. Empty legs, or discounted repositioning flights, can present a cheaper chartering alternative.

A search on Fly Victor shows that empty legs between New York and Los Angeles could be priced at approximately £26,313 ($30,929) for a Cessna Citation X or £35,342 ($46,833) for a Gulfstream IV.

To determine accurate costs, it is suggested to contact several charter operators or brokers, with specific details on travel dates, passenger numbers, and special requirements. Private ownership, fractional ownership, jet cards, and empty legs all present different advantages and cost implications to consider when flying privately.

Flying between New York and Los Angeles remains popular, and despite slowing growth since the pandemic, the demand for private jet charters along this route continues.
