Rebecca Sharpe Chief Financial Officer | Cathay Pacific

The Cathay Group has released its March 2025 traffic data, showing significant growth in both passenger and cargo sectors. Chief Customer and Commercial Officer Lavinia Lau highlighted their continued momentum towards reaching over 100 passenger destinations in the first half of 2025. Cathay Pacific relaunched its non-stop service to Hyderabad in March, and new routes to Dallas and Urumqi are coming soon. Additionally, HK Express will begin flights to Nha Trang, Ishigaki, and Komatsu.

"While March marked a quieter month for our travel business, our cargo business saw strong growth momentum," said Lau. The group faces uncertainties in trade tariffs that may disrupt cargo operations, and they're taking proactive steps to mitigate these challenges.

Cathay Pacific reported a 19.8% increase in passengers in March 2025 compared to the same month in 2024, with a 25.5% rise in Available Seat Kilometres (ASKs). Passenger numbers in the first quarter of 2025 grew by 23.4% compared to 2024. "While we saw softer demand for leisure travel in March due to the absence of long-weekend holidays in Hong Kong, demand for our premium cabins remained robust," Lau stated.

Cathay Cargo experienced a 10.6% rise in cargo tonnage in March, with Available Freight Tonne Kilometres (AFTKs) up by 8.5%. "Specialist solutions continue to be our area of focus," Lau mentioned, emphasizing the company's commitment to handling perishables and the use of new intermodal cold-chain routes.

HK Express carried over 610,000 passengers in March, marking a 25.4% increase year over year. The airline also expanded its Available Seat Kilometres by 35.6%. "HK Express maintained its growth momentum in March," noted Lau, who anticipates solid demand for the Easter holiday onwards despite a slower pickup for pre-summer bookings.

Cathay Pacific is poised to enhance passenger experience with plans to introduce 100% seatback inflight entertainment and high-speed Wi-Fi connectivity across its fleet starting in August 2025.
