John Wayne Airport (SNA) in Orange County, California, is known for its unique and tense takeoffs. Situated near Newport Beach, the airport faces constraints due to its shorter runway and proximity to residential areas, compelling airplanes to take off steeply and abruptly to minimize noise impact.

Pilots at John Wayne Airport engage full engine power before releasing brakes, creating a sudden rush and a steep ascent which helps in clearing the area quickly, much to the adrenaline rush of the passengers. However, such maneuvers are necessary due to the airport's strict noise abatement protocols.

The John Wayne Airport, named after the famed actor who lived nearby, is a commercial and general aviation airport serving the Greater Los Angeles area. It handled more than 11 million passengers last year, with airlines such as American, Delta, United, Southwest, and Alaska operating from there. Despite its busy nature, its main runway is one of the shortest in the US, making it incapable of supporting widebody aircraft.

The airport operates stringent noise monitoring and access programs. "JWA has one of the most stringent aircraft access and noise monitoring programs in the United States and, perhaps, the world," states the John Wayne Airport. The programs place restrictions on operational capacity and noise levels, with general aviation operations permitted 24 hours provided they comply with noise limits.

The main runway, used for most commercial flights, is 5,700 feet long and cannot be expanded due to surrounding infrastructure. Pilots employ specialized procedures to ensure safety; full engine power is used for takeoffs, resulting in pushed-back passengers. Landings are controlled to ensure quick deceleration.

Noise abatement is prioritized as the airport is situated close to residential neighborhoods. John Wayne Airport has ten permanent noise monitoring stations to regulate and ensure compliance with noise standards. "John Wayne Airport (SNA) is a noise-sensitive airport committed to being a good neighbor," declares the airport. It adheres strictly to the General Aviation Noise Ordinance, which enforces operational hours and noise levels.

The residents of Newport Beach and neighboring areas have in the past campaigned for stringent noise regulations to maintain community peace, making John Wayne Airport one of the most regulated in terms of noise control in the United States.
