Jaakko Schildt Chief Operating Officer of Finnair | Finnair

Finnair has announced that it will furlough 36 long-haul pilots from the end of September until at least May 2026. This decision arises from the ongoing dispute with the company's pilots' union, which opposes proposed changes to the collective agreement, particularly involving stand-by duty.

The Finnish airline plans to reduce the number of wet-lease routes operated on behalf of Qantas. Flights from Sydney Airport to Bangkok Suvarnabhumi Airport and Singapore Changi Airport have been affected, with Finnair intending to cancel the wet lease agreement on one route.

Chief Operating Officer of Finnair, Jaakko Schildt, stated that the “pilots’ actions have affected its ability to operate flights on behalf of Qantas, resulting in changes in our collaboration and, consequently, the need to furlough some of our pilots.” He termed the situation as “unfortunate for all parties.”

Negotiations between Finnair and the Finnish Air Line Pilots’ Association (SLL) have been ongoing since February, involving the National Conciliator. Meanwhile, SLL maintains that its demands are “justified and moderate compared to the savings measures of previous years.”

The SLL emphasized that after recovering from the double crisis of the COVID-19 pandemic and Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, which severely impacted operations, Finnair “has returned to profitability.” Vesa Uuspelto, Chairman of SLL, criticized Finnair’s reluctance to discuss changes that have “no economic impact.”

The Finnish carrier’s wet lease of two A330-300 aircraft for Qantas flights has also been limited due to the closure of Russian airspace to Western airlines. This limitation affects the utilization of these aircraft for routes bound for Asia.

Earlier in April, Finnair confirmed plans to cut flights during the summer, affecting around 30,000 passengers. SLL criticized the airline for citing a pilot shortage, claiming that the decision contradicts the company's 2025 planning guidelines.
