Joanna Geraghty CEO of JetBlue | Official Website

The Boston Celtics' air travel arrangements often spotlight their collaboration with JetBlue, their officially associated airline. The primary aircraft used by the Celtics is an Airbus A320-232, notably nicknamed "Lucky Blue." This aircraft bears the registration N595JB and is painted in the Celtics' signature green color, complete with the team's mascot, Lucky the Leprechaun, emblazoned on it.

JetBlue, founded in 2000 with Joanna Geraghty as CEO, operates from various hubs, including Boston Logan International Airport and New York JFK Airport. This collaboration ensures that the Celtics, when required, can utilize a Bombardier Challenger 605 for enhanced luxury. This access is part of a partnership with Sentient Jet.

Information about the cabin of "Lucky Blue" remains largely undisclosed but is assumed to be akin to JetBlue's standard "A320 Restyled" cabin, featuring modern amenities such as in-seat power options and high-speed Wi-Fi. The Celtics' luxury travel options also include the Bombardier Challenger 605, renowned for its spacious cabin and flexibility in seating arrangements, accommodating up to 12 passengers.

JetBlue also collaborates with another Boston sports team, the Boston Red Sox, offering a special A320 livery dedicated to them. The aircraft is named "Wally the Green Monster," reflecting JetBlue's commitment to Boston's iconic teams.

Within the professional basketball industry, the Bombardier Challenger 605 is a popular choice. Shaquille O'Neal, similarly, opted for a Challenger 605 in 2023, despite his previous reluctance toward private jet ownership due to maintenance costs.

Public criticism of the Celtics' use of private jets, and private jet usage by sports teams, in general, has been limited. However, there's increased scrutiny on professional sports for environmental impact. The Celtics have made efforts to reduce their ecological footprint, such as incorporating LED lighting at TD Garden and participating in the NBA's "Green Week" campaign.

As the conversation around environmental responsibility grows louder, the balancing act between luxury travel and environmental consciousness continues to be a topic of discussion in the sports industry. Shaquille O'Neal and other basketball stars face similar scrutiny regarding private jet ownership. In contrast, players like LeBron James, who does not own a private jet, remain exceptions.
