Delta Air Lines is collaborating with the Patagonia Azul Foundation to protect marine ecosystems in southern Chile. This collaboration aims to empower local communities through advanced technology and specialized training to enhance conservation efforts.

The Patagonia Azul Foundation, a Chilean non-profit, focuses on the conservation of the Chilean Patagonian Sea. The foundation was established with support from Sylvia Earle, a noted oceanographer and marine protection advocate, through her NGO Mission Blue. The foundation works closely with coastal communities, integrating science with local knowledge to ensure effective and sustainable conservation.

The agreement between Delta and Patagonia Azul emphasizes empowering local communities by developing financial mechanisms for economic gains from conservation. Initiatives aim to benefit communities around Pitipalena Añihué by associating sustainable economic models with environmental stewardship. Local fishers and community members may secure income while preserving marine resources. Tad Hutcheson, Delta’s Managing Director of Community Engagement, said, "Empowering local communities is a major focus of our Community Engagement strategy at Delta with one of our key pillars being to support the Environment."

The collaboration will support the provision of technology, such as hyperspectral drones, for ecosystem monitoring. This includes workshops and training by experts like PhD. Rodrigo Hucke-Gaete and Universidad Austral de Chile for local community members. This will enable them to conduct government-required monitoring.

The partnership also aligns with Delta’s operations in South America through its Joint Venture with LATAM, building a network across the Americas. Delta offers flights from Atlanta to Santiago de Chile and connections to southern Chile, catering to travelers interested in experiencing Patagonia.

Delta's involvement in this project underscores its commitment to supporting environmental causes and enhancing its presence in the South American region.
