Adding an authorized user to a credit card account offers potential benefits but also comes with risks. Authorized users can help meet spending requirements and build their credit history. However, primary cardholders should choose reliable individuals, as they remain responsible for charges.

"An authorized user is a person who has been added to a primary credit card holder's account," and they receive cards linked to the main account. Some benefits include access to credit card perks and the ability to transfer loyalty points, but cardholders should be aware of the potential for increased spending and the impact on credit utilization.

Different credit cards have varying policies for adding authorized users. For example, the American Express Platinum Card charges a fee of $195 per user, but provides benefits such as lounge access and elite status in loyalty programs. In contrast, the Capital One Venture X Rewards card allows up to four users without additional charges, offering lounge access for each user and guests.

Minimum age requirements for authorized users differ by issuer. "American Express requires authorized users to be at least 13 years old," while Discover has a minimum age of 15. Some companies have no age limit, whereas Capital One and Wells Fargo set it at 18.

Removing an authorized user is straightforward, usually requiring a call to the issuer. "Once the user has been removed from the account, which typically takes minutes, their credit card becomes inactive," although their credit report may list the account for a few weeks afterward.

The liability for the primary cardholder does not extend to authorized users, but working together responsibly can mitigate financial risks. When deciding between a joint account and adding an authorized user, consider that joint account holders share liability equally, while authorized users are not legally responsible for charges.

Ultimately, adding an authorized user can be a strategic move for credit card management, provided there is trust and clear communication regarding financial expectations.
