FedEx is bolstering its transatlantic route network from Belgium with the launch of a nonstop cargo flight from Liège to Memphis, USA. This strategic enhancement underlines FedEx's ongoing commitment to expanding its presence in Wallonia and developing its intercontinental freight center in Liège, which is increasingly crucial to the company's global operations.

Effective April 28, the frequency of flights from Liège to Memphis will increase from five to eight times per week. The route will utilize a Boeing 777 Freighter, capable of carrying up to 150,000 pounds of cargo.

The role of Liège in the FedEx air network has transformed significantly in recent years. As part of its global strategy to redesign its air route network for greater efficiency and utilization, Liège has become a dedicated intercontinental freight hub. The increased flight frequency reinforces Liège's role in FedEx's global network and aligns with its strategy to grow in the $80 billion global air freight market.

"Increasing the frequency of flights on the Liège – Memphis route highlights the strategic role of the hub in our global air network as an intercontinental freight hub for Europe. This development reflects our commitment to a strong and balanced presence in Wallonia. We are proud to continue supporting Liège, both in terms of infrastructure and human resources, while strengthening Belgium's role in international trade flows," said Rudi Loontiens, Managing Director, hub operations at FedEx.

FedEx's first nonstop flight on the Liège-Memphis route was launched in April 2017. Since then, the company has expanded its offer of transatlantic nonstop flights from Liège with new routes to Indianapolis and Oakland. Overall, the network strengthens the Belgian hub's position as a connecting point between Europe and global markets.

An economic growth driver for Wallonia, FedEx has operated in Liège since 1998, creating jobs, driving investments, and enhancing Belgium's position in global supply chains. The company's long-standing presence provides benefits to the local community by directly and indirectly supporting jobs, closely collaborating with local businesses, and enhancing the region's long-term economic stability. It provides essential logistical support to small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in the local market, enabling them to reach new economic regions and develop internationally.

FedEx is currently the largest employer at Liège Airport, employing 1,300 team members, over half of whom come from surrounding communities. In the fourth quarter of 2024 alone, FedEx created 130 new jobs and increased the number of contracts at the Liège hub. Over the past decade, the company has significantly invested in the location, including specialized equipment for the safe and efficient handling of freight, continuing operations with an eye on the safety of employees, goods, and aircraft.
