American Airlines and Dallas Fort Worth International Airport (DFW) have announced a significant expansion at DFW involving the construction of a new terminal, Terminal F. The project is valued at $4 billion and will feature dozens of new gates specifically for American Airlines. Terminal F is set to become DFW's sixth terminal, and its first phase is scheduled to open in 2027.

DFW is a critical hub for American Airlines, with CEO Robert Isom stating, "DFW is American's largest and most critical hub, and with this expanded plan for Terminal F, DFW has a clear path to become the largest airline hub in the world." The expansion will increase gate space for wide-body jets and provide more capacity for processing international arrivals. Future plans also include new lounges, such as a new Admirals Club.

The development will feature a new parking garage, an updated check-in and lobby experience, and a Skylink station to enhance connectivity between terminals. This is part of a broader investment in capital projects at DFW. The airport has seen a substantial increase in seat capacity for international flights in recent years, and further growth is anticipated. According to DFW CEO Sean Donohue, passenger traffic is expected to rise by 25% by 2030.

This expansion comes at a time when American Airlines is increasingly focusing on its Texas home base. The airline has increased its seat offerings by 33% from DFW compared to a decade ago, while international seat capacity at the airport has surged nearly 60% from 2014 levels. DFW was the second-busiest airport in the United States last year, next to Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport.
