Boeing is on the brink of delivering its last older generation passenger 777-300ER as it shifts focus to producing the 777X. There are only five unfulfilled orders for the passenger 777-300ER, all supposedly for Pakistan International Airlines (PIA). However, it's uncertain if these orders will ever materialize, with the final delivery potentially having already occurred to Altavair LP, a leasing company.

In 2012, PIA confirmed a $1.5 billion order for five 777-300ERs to expand its fleet, but these aircraft remain undelivered. The 777-300ER production has significantly slowed, with deliveries dwindling from 76 units in 2015 to single digits in subsequent years. The possible conclusion, as noted by The Air Current and other industry observers, is that Boeing's 777-300ER final delivery happened in 2024.

Altavair, having taken delivery of what might be the final 777-300ER, leases aircraft globally and has been involved in the aircraft's leasing arrangements. The last documented 777-300ER transaction by Altavair involved transferring an ex-China Southern Airlines aircraft to Ethiopian Airlines.

Ethiopian Airlines continues to acquire 777-300ERs and 777Fs. It holds a notable fleet, recently adding a 777F freighter and ordering eight 777-9 models. The global aviation industry anticipates the arrival of the Boeing 777X, a modern twin-engine aircraft lauded for its efficiency. With no domestic orders yet, it finds its primary market among international carriers like Emirates and Qatar Airways.

The transition to the 777X, subject to certification by the FAA, denotes the end of the 777-300ER era. As Boeing manages this transition, it's evident there's a clear focus on addressing upcoming challenges and opportunities with the new 777X model.
