Doug Lavin Vice President, Member and External Relations North America | International Air Transport Association - IATA

Nick Careen, IATA's Senior Vice President of Operations, Safety and Security, addressed the audience at the IATA Aviation Day MENA in Saudi Arabia. He expressed gratitude to Saudia Airlines for their hospitality and shared his impressions of the country's rapid aviation sector development.

Careen highlighted the significant contribution of aviation to Saudi Arabia's economy. "According to a recent IATA study, aviation and aviation-related tourism contributed a staggering USD 90.6 billion to the Saudi economy—8.5% of GDP," he stated. The sector supports 1.4 million jobs nationwide, with over 62,000 directly employed by airlines.

He attributed this growth to Vision 2030 led by His Royal Highness Prince Mohammed bin Salman, emphasizing that such progress is driven by ambition and strategic decisions.

Careen pointed out challenges in regional development due to geopolitical instability, regulatory fragmentation, and economic disparity. "Conflict negatively impacts aviation," he noted, referencing countries like Yemen and Syria where air travel has suffered due to instability.

To address these issues, Careen proposed several measures: harmonizing airspace management, aligning regulations across the region, promoting sustainability through collaboration on sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), and sharing technology and knowledge among neighboring countries.

He emphasized that a more integrated approach could unlock the full potential of Middle Eastern aviation. "These steps form the basis of a more connected and resilient aviation ecosystem across the entire Middle East region," he said.

In conclusion, Careen called for cooperation beyond borders to create partnerships benefiting the entire region. "A Middle East united by open skies... would ensure that no country is left behind in aviation’s growth story," he asserted.

IATA remains committed to supporting regional stakeholders with data and advocacy as they work towards a more integrated future for Middle Eastern aviation.
