Kamil Al-Awadi Regional Vice President, Africa and Middle East | International Air Transport Association - IATA

The International Air Transport Association (IATA) has published the Value of Air Transport study for Saudi Arabia, highlighting the significant economic and employment benefits generated by the aviation sector in the Kingdom. According to 2023 data, aviation contributes USD 90.6 billion to Saudi Arabia's economy, accounting for 8.5% of its Gross Domestic Product (GDP). The industry supports four million jobs, with 62,000 directly employed by airlines. Additionally, 713,600 tonnes of air cargo were handled.

Kamil Alawadhi, IATA’s Regional Vice President for Africa and Middle East, stated: “Aviation is a catalyst for economic and social development. Saudi Arabia has understood this and is using connectivity as a key element of its national economic strategy under Vision 2030. Already, aviation supports 1.4 million jobs and 8.5% of the Kingdom’s GDP."

Alawadhi emphasized that investments in infrastructure and talent development will further enhance the Kingdom's prosperity. He added: "Continued prioritization of aviation as a strategic sector supported by global standards, competitive costs and smart regulation will enhance Saudi Arabia’s global competitiveness, economic performance, and social development.”

IATA has identified three priorities to sustain aviation benefits in Saudi Arabia:

1. Collaboration and Global Standards: It is essential for Saudi Arabia to maintain collaboration with stakeholders while aligning with global standards.

2. Infrastructure: With ongoing investments in airport infrastructure and digitalization, ensuring cost competitiveness is crucial.

3. Capacity-Building: Developing a skilled workforce is necessary for Saudi Arabia to realize its potential as an aviation hub. IATA has signed agreements with local partners to train over 1,000 aviation graduates and employees.
