Alaska Air Group, Inc. has announced the election of Pete Shimer to its board of directors. Shimer, who previously held various executive roles at Deloitte, will fill the position left by Ken Thompson upon his retirement after 25 years of service. Shimer's appointment is effective immediately and he will participate in the board's Audit and Safety Committees.

Shimer has a long-standing career in accounting and finance, having served as an auditor before taking on multiple senior roles at Deloitte, including interim chief executive officer. He retires from Deloitte this month after a 41-year career. His educational background includes a bachelor's degree in accounting from the University of Washington, where he also serves on the Foundation's board. Additionally, he is involved with Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center as a board member.

Patty Bedient, Chair of Alaska Air Group's Board, expressed her enthusiasm about Shimer joining the team: "I am happy to welcome Pete to the Alaska Air Group board. His expertise in operational and financial matters will be an asset to us, as will his deeply-rooted commitment to the Seattle community and long history as an Alaska Airlines customer. We look forward to his contributions."

Ken Thompson leaves behind a legacy characterized by strong adherence to Alaska values and significant contributions beyond standard duties during his tenure on the board. Notably, he was instrumental in founding the Safety Committee following flight 261’s tragedy and played vital roles across various committees over his years of service.

Ben Minicucci, CEO of Alaska Air Group, commended Thompson for his valuable input: “Ken has been a trusted advisor to the management team, offering wisdom and perspective that have helped guide us through many critical moments in our history, and asking probing questions that have improved our thinking,” said Minicucci.

Directors at Alaska Air Group serve one-year terms following their election at the annual stockholders' meeting. With Shimer joining the ranks, there are now nine independent director seats on the board while Ben Minicucci continues serving as a non-independent director.
