Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) has announced the promotion of the upcoming HireLAX Apprenticeship Readiness Program orientation, scheduled for May 17.

According to Los Angeles World Airports (LAWA), the HireLAX Apprenticeship Readiness Program provides community members with a no-cost pathway into union construction careers, contributing directly to the airport’s $14.5 billion Capital Improvement Program. The program targets underserved and underrepresented populations in Los Angeles, preparing them for union apprenticeships through both classroom instruction and hands-on construction training. LAWA states that participants also receive certifications in construction safety and math, significantly increasing their long-term employability in the building trades.

As detailed by Los Angeles Southwest College, which partners with LAWA on the program, HireLAX spans eight weeks and includes courses in OSHA 10 safety training, blueprint reading, construction math, and tool identification. The program concludes with direct placement assistance into union apprenticeships, often within projects at LAX or other public infrastructure sites. This partnership helps bridge the gap between educational institutions and employment pipelines in the construction industry.

According to a report from BuildLACCD, the HireLAX program has graduated over 300 individuals since its launch, with more than 70% of graduates successfully placed in union apprenticeships. Many have gone on to contribute to LAWA’s modernization projects, including terminal upgrades and airfield improvements. The report highlights that these job placements often result in long-term, middle-class careers in the construction trades, advancing LAWA’s equity and inclusion goals.

According to Los Angeles World Airports, LAX is one of the world’s busiest airports and a critical gateway for international and domestic travel in the United States. Prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, LAX served nearly 90 million passengers annually and remained a central hub for major carriers including Delta Air Lines, American Airlines, and United Airlines. The airport is undergoing one of the largest public works programs in the country, intended to enhance operations and passenger experience for decades to come.
