Service Employees International Union (SEIU) workers and their allies participated in a virtual roundtable discussion on May 7, releasing a report titled "Flight Path to Safe, Secure, and Accessible Airports." The report highlights the challenges faced by airport service industry workers and the broader implications for passengers and communities.
The study focused on three major American Airlines hubs: Dallas, Charlotte, and Phoenix. It revealed that many workers struggle with basic necessities. According to the findings, 30% of workers at these airports could not afford medication, 25% experienced homelessness, and 52% ran out of money for food.
This report followed a rally on April 28 at Phoenix Sky Harbor Airport. SEIU-organized airport service workers were joined by Attorney General Kris Mayes to demand a $25 an hour minimum wage and safe working conditions at PHX. Similarly, airport workers at Charlotte Airport rallied at the City Council seeking fair wages, benefits, and training standards. American Airlines operates nearly all flights at CLT.
