An Air Canada flight from Montréal to Paris was diverted to St. John's due to an unruly passenger on board. The flight, which eventually reached its destination three hours late, encountered this disruption shortly after departure.

The incident took place on May 14 aboard Flight AC870, operated by a Boeing 777-300ER. After departing Montreal at 21:45, the aircraft began descending from 33,000 feet approximately an hour into the journey and landed in St. John's at around 01:22. Officers escorted the disruptive passenger, identified as a 45-year-old man, off the plane upon landing. He faced charges under the Aeronautics Act for unruly behavior and was held for court proceedings.

Air Canada's Boeing 777 remained grounded for nearly two hours before continuing its journey to Paris. It departed St. John's at 03:51 and arrived in Paris at 13:14 without further incidents.

Unruly passenger behavior poses safety risks and causes significant disruptions. In recent years, there has been growing concern over such incidents worldwide, with airlines reporting thousands of cases annually.

Ryanair is among airlines seeking compensation from passengers causing diversions due to misconduct. In Europe and elsewhere, similar legal actions are being pursued against disruptive individuals.

Under Canada's Aeronautics Act (R.S.C., 1985, c.A-2), endangering an aircraft or interfering with crew duties can result in severe penalties including fines up to $100,000 or prison sentences up to five years.
