May marks a significant month for transatlantic air travel, with 27 new routes launching between the United States and Europe. These developments occur just before the peak summer season, which traditionally sees high passenger traffic and fares. The route expansions include two one-off flights by Global Airlines using Airbus A380 aircraft from Glasgow and Manchester to New York JFK.

The additions feature several inaugural services, such as Denver to Rome and a new link between Ireland and Indiana. Other notable launches include Discover's Frankfurt to Minneapolis service, KLM's Amsterdam to San Diego route, and TAP Air Portugal's connections from Lisbon to Los Angeles and Porto to Boston.

Among the 27 routes starting this month, nearly half represent markets previously unserved by any airline. Three European airports—Bilbao, Catania, and Faro—will see US flights for the first time. This expansion means over 50 European airports will offer US-bound passenger flights this summer.

US carriers are behind two-thirds of these new routes, with Delta Air Lines leading with seven new services. Delta is expanding its Dublin network to five routes by adding Detroit-Dublin flights.

On May 16th, TAP Air Portugal launched a Lisbon-Los Angeles service while United Airlines inaugurated its Newark-Faro route. Initially scheduled for 2024 but delayed due to an FAA review following operational incidents, United's Faro service will utilize an older aircraft frame from Continental Airlines' fleet.

TAP Air Portugal now serves eight US airports with its longest nonstop route being Lisbon to Los Angeles at 4,944 nautical miles (9,156 km). In June, TAP plans to introduce another long-distance flight from Lisbon via Terceira to San Francisco.

Southern Europe dominates these new connections due to strong demand from US travelers. Italy benefits notably with nine added routes connecting cities like Catania, Milan, Naples, Palermo, Rome, and Venice. American Airlines has initiated a Chicago-Naples service that could increase market growth significantly due to direct flight convenience.

Naples is now connected directly with five US destinations through various airlines: American from Chicago and Philadelphia; Delta from Atlanta and New York JFK; United from Newark. August is expected to see up to six daily departures compared to four in August 2024 or just one daily pre-pandemic in August 2019.
