Pilatus PC-24 | Wikipedia

The Pilatus PC-24, a light business jet, remains a strong contender in the competitive private aviation market. This class of aircraft typically accommodates eight to ten passengers and offers a range of approximately 2,000 nautical miles. Such jets are popular among business executives and pilot owners for domestic or regional travel. The PC-24 stands out in this category, competing with models from Honda Aircraft Company, Cessna, and Embraer.

In terms of cost, new Pilatus PC-24s are priced around $13 million according to Guardian Jet, while used models may be available for approximately $9 million as per Evo Jets. These jets offer affordability in purchase and maintenance compared to larger private jets.

The development of the PC-24 began after Pilatus's success with its turboprop model, the Pilatus PC-12. Introduced in 1991, the PC-12 was favored by various operators including airlines and government agencies due to its short-field operation capability and low operating costs. Feedback from PC-12 customers led Pilatus to start developing the jet-powered PC-24 in 2007.

The project was publicly announced in May 2013 at EBACE in Geneva. The first prototype flew in May 2015 after extensive testing that included over 2,200 flight hours across three prototypes. By December 2017, the aircraft received type certification from both EASA and FAA.

The PC-24 features design elements suited for versatile operations including landing on grass and gravel runways. It is powered by two Williams FJ44 turbofan engines providing significant thrust which contributes to its performance specifications such as a maximum takeoff weight of 18,700 pounds and a cruise speed of 440 knots.

Inside the cabin, it can seat up to ten passengers and is equipped with advanced avionics like Honeywell's Primus Epic 2 suite allowing single-pilot operation.

Operators of the PC-24 include PlaneSense as well as charter companies like Cutter Aviation. Individuals such as Jeff Bezos have also opted for this model. Government operators include Spain’s national police force and Qatar’s Emiri Air Force.

When comparing operating costs, Liberty Jet estimates expenses between $1 million and $1.5 million annually depending on usage hours. Fixed costs cover crew payment and insurance while variable costs include fuel and maintenance.

In comparison with other light business jets like Cessna Citation CJ3/CJ4 or Embraer Phenom 300, the PC-24 holds its ground with similar range capabilities but differs slightly in pricing structure.
