Miami International Airport (MIA), one of Florida's busiest airports, is set to undergo significant upgrades as part of the Modernization in Action Plan. This initiative, led by Miami-Dade County officials and supported by Mayor Daniella Levine Cava, aims to ensure the airport is ready for future demands. The plan includes renovations to existing infrastructure such as escalators, elevators, moving walkways, public restrooms, and passenger loading bridges.

Mayor Levine Cava's proposal comes amid discussions among county officials about potentially developing a new airport due to capacity concerns. Kevin Marino Cabrera has pointed out that Miami International Airport is nearing its limits and faces numerous infrastructure issues. Despite these challenges, the current plan focuses on renovating MIA under a $9 billion program designed to make it "Future Ready."

The airport currently serves over 53 million passengers annually and handles more than three million tons of cargo. It acts as a major hub for airlines connecting the United States with South America, Central America, the Caribbean, Europe, and Africa. With projections showing an increase to 77 million passengers and four million tons of freight by 2040, further expansions are planned.

The Miami-Dade board of County Commissioners has approved a $5 billion improvement plan that includes upgrading the South Terminal with six additional domestic gates. These enhancements will accommodate increased activity levels and allow for the demolition of Concourse G.

Historically significant since its establishment in June 1928 by Pan American Airways, MIA has grown into a central hub for major airlines like American Airlines. The airport features three terminals—North, South, and Central—with a total of 131 gates across six concourses.

In addition to commercial operations, MIA serves as an international cargo hub with facilities operated by LATAM Cargo, Atlas Air, Amerijet International, DHL, FedEx Express, UPS Airlines, and Centurion Cargo.

As Miami International Airport continues its expansion efforts under the Modernization in Action Plan and other initiatives approved by local authorities, it remains poised to meet growing demands while supporting tourism—a key economic driver for Florida.
