FedEx has announced that its operations ramp at Cargo City in Las Américas International Airport (SDQR) has received the CEIV Pharma Certification from the International Air Transport Association (IATA). This certification highlights the company's commitment to excellence in pharmaceutical logistics.

The CEIV Pharma Certification, established by IATA in 2014, acknowledges quality standards and regulatory requirements for the safe handling and air transportation of high-value, temperature-sensitive pharmaceuticals. Through extensive training and operational analysis, this certification confirms that facilities, equipment, operations, and personnel meet the stringent standards set by the pharmaceutical industry.

“We're very proud to receive the CEIV Pharma Certification. It demonstrates our commitment to maintaining the highest quality standards and control to preserve pharmaceutical product integrity during transport,” said Basil Khalil, Vice President of Operations for FedEx in the Caribbean and Central America. “The strategic importance and resilience of the Dominican Republic continue to inspire us as we support growth in the country's pharmaceutical and medical equipment sectors.”

According to data from the Ministry of Industry, Commerce and Mipymes (MICM), over the past five years, pharmaceuticals have been exported to more than 50 markets from the Dominican Republic. The Asociación de Industrias Farmacéuticas Dominicanas (INFADOMI) recently reported that investments exceeding $300 million have been made in manufacturing plants and processes aligned with best practices during this period. In this context, the United States plays a key role in the pharmaceutical supply chain, including raw material imports.

Currently, FedEx's operations ramp in Santo Domingo at Las Américas International Airport features a new cold room with controlled temperatures for refrigerated products (2 to 8 degrees Celsius), as well as designated spaces for installing active cold chain containers. The local operation connects directly with FedEx's Hub in Memphis, Tennessee four times a week and with FedEx's ramp in Aguadilla, Puerto Rico five times a week.

In terms of shipment visibility, FedEx offers its SenseAware technology for customers in the Dominican Republic. This sensor-based device monitors conditions such as location and temperature while products travel through FedEx's network. The ability to predict potential disruptions allows both FedEx and its customers to make informed decisions quickly to ensure integrity and timely delivery of highly sensitive shipments like those from the pharmaceutical industry.

Besides its operations ramp in Santo Domingo (SDQR), another 14 FedEx facilities worldwide are receiving CEIV certification this May 2025. Previously, FedEx obtained CEIV Pharma certification for its Hubs in Memphis (MEM) and Indianapolis (IND) in 2024 along with ramps at San Juan (SJU) and Aguadilla (BQN), Puerto Rico.
