IndiGo Boeing 787-9 | Official Website

IndiGo is set to launch new long-haul routes from Mumbai to Manchester and Amsterdam in July. This move marks IndiGo's debut at both airports, with the airline opting for Mumbai over Delhi due to larger market potential and less nonstop competition. Tickets for these routes are now available.

The airline will operate Boeing 787-9 aircraft on these routes, damp-leased from Norse Atlantic. Damp leasing covers the aircraft, insurance, maintenance, and pilots but excludes cabin crew. IndiGo first utilized the 787 for a service to Bangkok on March 1, 2025.

Each route will be served three times weekly, starting July 1 for Manchester and July 2 for Amsterdam. Despite limited lead-in time of six weeks, IndiGo hopes to leverage its existing codeshare with Turkish Airlines via Istanbul to build awareness.

Mumbai-Manchester flights will occur on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays, while Mumbai-Amsterdam flights are scheduled for Wednesdays, Fridays, and Sundays. The schedules are designed to connect with domestic IndiGo flights arriving in Mumbai during late night hours.

In 2024, approximately 390,000 passengers traveled between Manchester and India. Although this represents a high-volume market, it has been underserved by nonstop carriers in recent years. Jet Airways previously operated the Mumbai-Manchester route until its closure in 2019.

IndiGo's choice of Manchester over London is driven by traffic volume and first-mover advantage. With an estimated 96,000 round-trip passengers between Mumbai and Manchester last year compared to Delhi's 75,000, IndiGo aims to stimulate traffic as the sole operator.

For the Mumbai-Amsterdam route currently served daily by KLM using various aircraft models depending on the season—777-200ER or 787-10 in summer and 777-300ER in winter—IndiGo plans to capitalize on its growing codeshare with KLM.

The local market between Mumbai and Amsterdam comprises around 70,000 passengers annually. By focusing on connectivity through Mumbai rather than competing directly with existing operators from Delhi, IndiGo seeks to grow this market segment effectively.
