Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR) remains a pivotal hub for numerous airlines, despite recent operational challenges. The airport has seen continuous growth over the years, becoming one of the busiest in the United States. CEO James Gill oversees operations at this key facility, which features three terminals and extensive passenger services.

Originally opened as Newark Metropolitan Airport in 1928, it was the first airport with a paved airstrip serving the New York area. During World War II, it served as a logistics base for the Army Air Corps. Commercial services resumed in 1946, and significant expansions occurred during the jet age with new terminals opening in 1973 and 1988.

The airport was renamed Newark Liberty International Airport in 2002 to honor September 11th victims. Since then, renovations have continued, including a new Terminal A that opened in 2022.

Spanning over 2,000 acres across Newark and Elizabeth, New Jersey, EWR offers more than 125 gates through its three modern terminals. Terminal A provides state-of-the-art facilities with automated check-in and security processes. Terminal B is known for its international arrivals hall renovated in 2014. Terminal C serves United Airlines exclusively with dedicated lounges and dining options.

EWR handles over 40 million passengers annually and is ranked as the 13th-busiest U.S. airport by passenger traffic. It supports nonstop flights to more than 180 destinations worldwide.

United Airlines is the largest carrier at EWR, operating from Terminal C since consolidating its New York area operations there in 2015. This strategic move allowed United to reduce costs while expanding its network connectivity.

Newark faces competition from nearby LaGuardia (LGA) and John F. Kennedy International Airports (JFK). While JFK focuses on international routes and LGA on short-haul business travel, EWR differentiates itself through unique route offerings largely driven by United Airlines' diverse network.

Despite infrastructure limitations constraining growth potential, Newark continues to support airline competition by developing new facilities aimed at various customer segments—from business travelers using modern Terminal A to leisure travelers served by budget airlines at Terminal B.
