Bjørn Tore Larsen, the Founder and CEO of Norse Atlantic | Official Website

Norse Atlantic Airways has reported significant financial growth, driven by a new business model that combines scheduled flights with wet lease operations. The Norway-based airline has confirmed plans to wet lease up to six Boeing 787-9 aircraft to IndiGo, an Indian low-cost carrier eager to expand into long-haul flights. One aircraft, registered as LN-FNC, is already operational under this agreement.

The airline's Q1 results for 2025 indicate positive trends. Bjørn Tore Larsen, the Founder and CEO of Norse Atlantic, noted a strong start to the year with an average load factor reaching 95%, which he described as "world-leading." The company has improved its key performance metrics through a strategy mixing scheduled services with Aircraft, Crew, Maintenance, and Insurance (ACMI) operations. This approach reduced Q1 losses from $62.8 million in the previous year to $14.9 million.

"Our progress and aim to deliver full-year 2025 profitability are supported by the commercial strategy delivering increased load factor, the transition to a dual-leg ACMI and own network model, and ongoing cost and efficiency initiatives," Larsen stated.

In comparison to Q1 2024, Norse Atlantic has shown improvements across various metrics: more flights operated (1,052 versus 862), higher passenger numbers (304,588 versus 201,462), increased airfares per passenger ($270 versus $250), and total revenue per passenger ($339 versus $324). Although ancillary revenues per passenger decreased slightly from $74 to $69 due to "a re-packaging of product bundles," costs per available seat kilometer (CASK) were lowered from 6.76¢ in Q1 2024 to 5.84¢.

Out of its fleet of twelve Boeing 787-9s, three are currently used for charter flights. From the second half of 2025 onwards, ACMI and charter operations will play a larger role in the airline's business model. IndiGo plans to integrate five more Norse Atlantic aircraft gradually from September through early 2026.

Norse Atlantic emphasized favorable lease terms for its remaining Boeing 787-9s after returning a subleased Boeing 787-8 in Q1. These terms offer long-term cost advantages without price or inflationary adjustments. The wet lease agreement with IndiGo reflects favorable market conditions for long-term ACMI and charter operations.

Larsen mentioned that while Norse Atlantic will have eleven Boeing 787-9s available this summer, it will reduce its fleet for scheduled flights to six aircraft moving forward. This decision aims at balancing fixed revenue from ACMI with opportunities in their scheduled network as bookings continue positively impacting revenues and load factors.
