Lavinia Lau Chief Customer and Commercial Officer | Cathay Pacific

The Cathay Group has released its traffic figures for April 2025, indicating a significant increase in both passenger and cargo operations compared to the previous year. Chief Customer and Commercial Officer Lavinia Lau noted that April was a positive month for the company's travel business, driven by holidays in Hong Kong, mainland China, and other parts of Asia. During the Easter travel peak on April 18, Cathay Pacific and HK Express together carried over 115,000 passengers.

Lau stated: “As a Group, we are continuing to add more ports to our extensive passenger network, having launched flights to five new destinations in just April, including Dallas-Fort Worth and Urumqi for Cathay Pacific, and Nha Trang, Ishigaki and Komatsu for HK Express.” She added that they aim to reach 100 passenger destinations within the first half of the year.

On the cargo side, recent tariff announcements between China and the United States have provided some market reassurance. Lau mentioned: “We will continue to closely monitor the market conditions and leverage our built-in flexibility to adjust freighter capacity.”

Cathay Pacific saw a 36.3% increase in passengers carried in April 2025 compared with April 2024. Available Seat Kilometres (ASKs) rose by 27.1%. For the first four months of 2025, there was a 26.6% rise in passengers compared with the same period last year.

Lau commented on leisure travel demand: “Following a quieter month in March, leisure travel demand experienced a boost in April... Then towards the end of April, we observed robust pre-holiday demand from the Chinese Mainland and Japan.”

Cathay Cargo recorded a 13.6% increase in cargo carried during April compared to last year. Available Freight Tonne Kilometres (AFTKs) increased by 8.9%, although load factor decreased slightly by 1.1 percentage points.

In response to these results, Lau said: “Tonnage in April was 10.4% lower than in March... However, our specialist solutions maintained their growth momentum.”

HK Express also reported strong growth with over 690,000 passengers carried in April—a rise of 47.4% from last year—and ASKs grew by 42%. Over the first four months of this year, passenger numbers increased by 37.6%.

Lau highlighted HK Express's performance: “Buoyed by the long-weekend holidays in April... Extra sectors to popular destinations like Bangkok, Seoul and Phu Quoc were added over the Ching Ming Festival and Easter amidst strong demand.”

The detailed figures for The Cathay Group's performance are available on their website.
