Chicago airports prepare for increased Memorial Day weekend travel

O'Hare and Midway International Airports in Chicago are preparing for a busy Memorial Day weekend, with more than 1.86 million travelers expected, according to projections from the Chicago Department of Aviation (CDA). This marks an increase of approximately 5% compared to last year's holiday period. The surge in travel is anticipated from Thursday, May 22 through Tuesday, May 27.

Mayor Brandon Johnson commented on the influx of visitors: "As Chicago prepares to usher in another summer season filled with internationally renowned events, neighborhood gatherings and local fun, we’re rolling out the welcome mat for everyone traveling to our great city."

At O'Hare, airlines expect over 1.58 million passengers, a rise of 6.9% from the previous year. Midway anticipates welcoming more than 282,000 travelers. The busiest day at O'Hare is projected to be Thursday, May 22, while Midway expects its highest volume on Monday, May 26.

CDA Acting Commissioner Tracey H. Payne stated: "As Chicago is home to one of world’s busiest aviation systems, we are always well-equipped to manage the large numbers of passengers traveling through our airports during busy holiday periods."

Travelers are advised about various services and amenities available at both airports:

- Cell Phone Lots offer free waiting areas at both airports.

- Public transit options include CTA Blue Line service to O'Hare and CTA Orange Line service to Midway.

- Metra's North Central Service provides weekday service between Union Station and O'Hare Transfer station.

- Parking updates can be checked at FlyChicago.com.

- Enhanced Passenger Processing (EPP) offers biometric screening for U.S. citizens returning from international destinations at O'Hare.

Additionally, rideshare pickups for apps like Uber and Lyft are designated in specific areas at Terminal 2 for O’Hare arrivals.

Concessions have expanded with new dining options in Terminal 1 at O’Hare including Pronto Sandwiches and The Bronze Pizza. Mobile ordering is available through orderORD.com.

Live entertainment will be provided throughout the holiday weekend at both airports with performances scheduled on May 22 and Passenger Appreciation Days planned on May 22 and May 23.

Families traveling with young children can utilize designated play areas such as the Family Lounge at O’Hare or Mother’s Rooms available at both airports.
