easyJet, a UK-based low-cost airline, has announced the opening of a new base in Newcastle. The carrier estimates that this expansion will support 1,200 jobs. This calculation is based on the assumption that each UK-based aircraft directly supports 400 jobs and adds further gross value.

Currently, easyJet ranks as the fourth-largest airline in terms of weekly seats offered from Newcastle. With the addition of the new base at Newcastle International Airport (NCL), which will become operational in March 2026, easyJet plans to base three aircraft there. This move is expected to create 130 pilot, cabin crew, and engineer jobs while supporting approximately 1,200 jobs across the UK.

Kenton Jarvis, CEO of easyJet, stated that "the UK is a really important market for us," citing demand for flights and package holidays as key drivers behind this decision. He added: “This not only consolidates our position as the UK’s largest leisure airline but will create many skilled jobs and provide critical connectivity for the region.”

Nick Jones, CEO of Newcastle Airport, expressed enthusiasm about easyJet's new base. He noted that it would offer greater connectivity to leisure destinations and boost the local economy by creating high-quality jobs and attracting more visitors. Jones emphasized that "the airport is a key economic driver for the North East."

easyJet's move to open a base in Newcastle aligns with its growth strategy in the UK, which remains its largest market with over half of its passengers traveling through British airports. In recent years, easyJet has opened bases at London Southend Airport (SEN) and Birmingham Airport (BHX).

According to aviation analytics company Cirium, easyJet currently ranks fourth among airlines operating from Newcastle in terms of weekly departures and seats offered. The carrier's network from Newcastle includes destinations such as Alicante-Elche Miguel Hernández Airport (ALC), Amsterdam Schiphol Airport (AMS), Belfast International Airport (BFS), Bristol Airport (BRS), Málaga-Costa del Sol Airport (AGP), Palma de Mallorca Airport (PMI), and Paris Charles de Gaulle Airport (CDG).

Other airlines with significant operations at Newcastle include TUI Airways, Ryanair, Jet2, KLM, British Airways, Loganair, Air France, Aer Lingus, and Emirates.
