United Airlines is working to overcome recent operational challenges at Newark Liberty International Airport. The airport, located in New Jersey, is a crucial hub for United, with 19,185 flights scheduled this May compared to fewer flights at other New York airports.

The airline faced significant disruptions due to an air traffic control outage that led to staff shortages and flight delays of up to four hours. As a result, United canceled dozens of flights but is now taking steps to recover.

Jon Gooda, United's VP of Airport Operations, explained that the decision to cancel 35 round-trip flights helped ease congestion and stabilize operations. He noted that the disruption was also influenced by ongoing runway construction work.

Despite these challenges, United had a strong start to the year at Newark. "In the first three months of this year, United canceled flights to and from Newark at a lower rate than any other airline," Gooda stated. Since adjusting its schedule in early May, Newark has improved its on-time arrivals performance.

Gooda highlighted that "on eight of the past 11 days, we canceled less than 1% of our flights out of EWR." He also mentioned that "United is number one nationwide in May for on-time departures."

Runway construction at Newark is expected to conclude in mid-June. Until then, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has limited operations to 28 arrivals and departures per hour. Despite these limitations, United plans to gradually increase its schedule over the summer while maintaining reliability.

Gooda acknowledged that "every airline’s schedule at EWR will be smaller than planned and smaller than last year." However, he expressed confidence in delivering reliable service for East Coast travelers.
