Washington Dulles International Airport recently added 10 new routes over a two-day period, marking a significant expansion just ahead of the summer travel season. The new routes were introduced by Allegiant, Frontier, and United Airlines. Among these are three long-haul flights to Europe and Africa.

United Airlines has expanded its network with eight new routes, including flights to Destin/Fort Walton Beach, Nice, and Venice—destinations that previously had no direct service from Dulles. Notably, United has launched a new route to Dakar, Senegal. This marks the first time the airline has served this African destination from Dulles. Behramjee Ghadially, a senior network planner and industry commentator, expressed skepticism about the viability of this route due to limited passenger numbers between North America and Dakar.

Allegiant Air now operates twice-weekly flights to Savannah and Knoxville from Dulles, becoming the second airline on these routes since Independence Air ceased operations in 2005. Meanwhile, Frontier Airlines has reintroduced Miami flights after American Airlines exited the market in 2018.

The addition of Nice and Venice brings Washington Dulles' European connections to 21 airports serviced by 16 different carriers. United alone accounts for nearly half of all departures to Europe from Dulles in July.

Ghadially noted that United's lack of onward interline or codeshare agreements via Dakar might limit connectivity options for passengers traveling beyond Senegal. Despite these challenges, United continues to expand its international offerings from Washington Dulles.
