On May 22, a Eurowings Europe Malta Airbus A320-200 experienced a tailstrike during a go-around while operating flight EW-6838 from Palma de Mallorca to Paderborn. The incident was reported by The Aviation Herald. The aircraft landed safely on its second attempt, and emergency services attended to it upon arrival.

Passengers noted a steep climb immediately after the initial touchdown, and checked luggage was reportedly damaged due to the tailstrike. Eurowings confirmed that the tail had struck the runway surface during the go-around and stated that the aircraft is currently undergoing a technical inspection.

Flight EW-6838, registration 9H-EUT, typically arrives in Paderborn in the mid-afternoon. On May 22, as it approached runway 24 at around 16:17, the crew initiated a go-around. According to The Aviation Herald, the aircraft’s tail made contact with the runway during this maneuver. It then climbed first to 3,000 feet and then to 5,000 feet before positioning for a second approach. The aircraft landed without further incident approximately 20 minutes later. No injuries were reported.

Eurowings stated that there was a sudden loss of altitude just before landing which caused significant force on the main gear when it hit the runway. Ground teams inspected the aircraft upon arrival and are reviewing any structural damage.

Go-arounds are standard safety procedures carried out when crews determine that landing cannot be completed safely due to unstable approaches or other issues such as changing wind conditions or technical problems. In this case, Eurowings reported an unexpected loss of altitude just before touchdown which likely disrupted the approach and led to the go-around.

Although routinely practiced, go-arounds can present risks when executed at low altitudes; one such risk is a tailstrike occurring from an excessive nose-up pitch angle causing rear fuselage contact with the runway. Tailstrikes remain a notable safety concern in global aviation.

According to IATA’s Global Aviation Data Management (GADM) system, between 2013 and 2022, 79% of tailstrike accidents occurred during landing or go-around phases. In 2022 alone more than 250 airlines reported 24 such events with six classified as accidents; by 2024 they were among common accident types globally.

Recent months have seen several similar incidents involving various aircraft types under different conditions mostly occurring during landings or go-arounds: On May 17th Turkish Airlines' Airbus A321neo struck its tail during another go-around at Prague's Václav Havel Airport but landed without further issues; In April Aurigny ATR72-212A encountered gusty winds leading up-to its own incident at Guernsey Airport though rolling out normally afterwards despite sustaining significant damage; March saw IndiGo’s Airbus A321neo striking Chennai's Runway25 marking twice within year same plane involved again yet completing rollout unscathed post-event itself too showing no injuries either time round across all cases mentioned above altogether likewise ultimately so far thankfully still
