Antonov An-24 | Wikipedia

An Antonov An-24 aircraft, operated by Angara Airlines, experienced a nose gear collapse upon landing in Kirensk, Russia. The incident occurred at the end of a domestic flight and resulted in the plane coming to rest on the grass. Fortunately, there were no injuries reported among the 51 people onboard.

This is not the first incident involving Angara Airlines' Antonov An-24 planes. These older aircraft have been involved in several accidents previously. Due to current sanctions affecting Russian aviation, the airline may continue using these aging planes for some time.

Angara Airlines operates domestic flights with Antonov fixed-wing aircraft and Mil helicopters. According to Cirium, an aviation analytics company, Angara scheduled 132 services with the Antonov An-24 this month. All flights either start or end at Irkutsk International Airport (IKT), which serves as its main hub.

The most frequently served route connects Irkutsk with Kirensk (KCK), located 407 miles away. Today's flight from Irkutsk to Kirensk was scheduled to depart at 12:50 local time and arrive at 14:40. The Aviation Safety Network confirms that it landed punctually at 14:33. The plane involved was built in 1973 and registered as RA-46620.

According to Air Live, when the aircraft landed in Kirensk, its nose landing gear collapsed, causing a runway excursion into adjacent grass. Despite dramatic scenes, no injuries were reported among the 46 passengers and five crew members onboard.

Due to damage sustained by the aircraft, its return flight to Irkutsk has been canceled. Flightradar24 notes that Angara Airlines flight 84 was supposed to take off at 15:40 local time but remains listed as 'unknown.' An additional round trip from Irkutsk to Kirensk is scheduled for tomorrow morning.

In previous incidents involving Angara's Antonov An-24s, one ditched into the Ob River in July 2011 after an engine fire, resulting in seven fatalities and injuries to 19 others. Another crash occurred in June 2019 in Nizhneangarsk due to engine failure during approach, killing two people when it veered off into a building.

The same plane involved in today's incident also made headlines before while operating for Khabarovsk Avia when it had to return due to low oil pressure.
