Lufthansa B747-400 | Official Website

Lufthansa has announced changes to its winter 2025/2026 flight schedule, notably affecting its Boeing 747-400 operations. The airline will not use the 747-400 on its Frankfurt to New York JFK route during this period, opting instead for the Airbus A340 and Boeing 747-8i. This decision aligns with last winter's schedule when the 371-seater aircraft was also absent from JFK.

The transition to winter schedules will occur on October 26, 2025, and last until March 28, 2026. During this time, Lufthansa plans to operate the Boeing 747-400 from Frankfurt to Boston and Chicago O'Hare. The shift involves replacing one of the two daily flights between Frankfurt and JFK with an A340 model until January when the newer Boeing 747-8i will take over.

"Lufthansa is the last remaining operator of passenger 747-400s to the US's leading long-haul gateway," noted in a report examining US departures for the upcoming winter season. It further highlights that "just 124 takeoffs will be on the 747-400," marking a significant reduction compared to previous years.

Meanwhile, Air China, Korean Air, and Lufthansa plan to continue using their Boeing 747-8i models at JFK throughout winter. Notably, Korean Air intends a double daily service using this variant.

For other routes during winter, Lufthansa's eight Boeing 747-400 aircraft are scheduled for a total of approximately five daily departures from Frankfurt. The airline anticipates increased activity beginning February with six daily flights on select dates through March.

Between January and March next year, Lufthansa plans for more frequent use of the jumbo jet on routes including Chicago O'Hare and Houston Intercontinental compared to previous winters. The adjustments reflect broader strategic decisions as Lufthansa prepares for fleet updates with future arrivals like the delayed Boeing 777-9.
