WestJet | Official Website

WestJet, which began operations in 1996 with a modest fleet of Boeing 737-200 aircraft, has grown significantly over nearly three decades. The airline now boasts approximately 190 aircraft and serves over 120 destinations worldwide. WestJet's journey from a regional low-cost carrier to a full-service hybrid airline has been heavily influenced by its partnership with Boeing.

The WestJet Group includes the mainline operations, the regional subsidiary WestJet Encore, and Swoop, an ultra-low-cost carrier fully absorbed into the mainline brand in October 2023. In the same year, WestJet expanded its reach by acquiring Sunwing Airlines.

"WestJet now operates as a full-service hybrid carrier," with primary hubs at Calgary International Airport, Toronto Pearson International Airport, and Vancouver International Airport. The airline's transformation into a network carrier with long-haul capabilities is attributed to strategic decisions involving its fleet and routes.

Since its inception, WestJet's fleet has primarily consisted of Boeing aircraft (excluding regional operations by WestJet Encore). This partnership enabled significant growth phases for domestic services and transatlantic operations. The introduction of the Boeing 737 Next Generation series allowed for better performance and longer domestic reach.

"The adoption of the 737 MAX family allowed WestJet to maintain low costs on expanding transborder and leisure networks," while the 787 Dreamliner facilitated long-haul operations. Currently, WestJet focuses on consolidating its position in Western Canada and increasing service to US and leisure destinations through a standardized Boeing fleet.

Boeing’s cabin innovations have also enhanced passenger comfort aboard WestJet flights. Features such as improved overhead storage, reduced noise levels, enhanced lighting, and flexible configurations are credited for improving boarding efficiency and passenger experience.

Fuel efficiency remains central to WestJet’s strategy. Successive generations of Boeing aircraft have contributed to lower fuel consumption while maintaining operational efficiency. Notably, "WestJet became the first Canadian airline to operate the 737 MAX 8," which offers significant fuel savings over earlier models.

The expansion of market reach was facilitated by variants like the Boeing 737-700. This model helped shape early growth by allowing longer routes within Canada and beyond without intermediate stops.

Before acquiring widebody aircraft for international routes, "WestJet relied on narrowbody Boeing jets." The introduction of the MAX series provided greater range at lower costs for medium-haul routes where widebodies were not viable economically.

In pursuit of future expansion goals, "in 2022, WestJet placed its largest-ever aircraft order with Boeing: 42 confirmed 737 MAX 10s." These aircraft are expected to be instrumental in supporting both domestic strategies focused on Western Canada as well as broader transcontinental expansions due to their capacity benefits and cost efficiencies.
