Nguyen Thi Phuong Thao Chairwoman of Vietjet | Vietjet

Vietjet, a Vietnamese low-cost airline, has confirmed an order for an additional 20 Airbus A330-900 aircraft. This move doubles its existing backlog of the widebody aircraft initially ordered in February 2024 and firmed up during the Farnborough International Airshow in July 2024.

The airline currently operates seven A330-300 aircraft across Asia-Pacific destinations. The new order supports Vietjet's plans to expand its international route network, potentially including flights to Europe.

Nguyen Thi Phuong Thao, Chairwoman of Vietjet, and Wouter van Wersch, President of Airbus International, signed the agreement in Hanoi. The event was attended by Emmanuel Macron, President of France, and Luong Cuong, President of Vietnam. Macron is on a tour of Southeast Asian countries and emphasized the importance of cooperation with France’s partners on climate, economy, and geopolitical challenges. "This is why France is present and acting with its partners," he stated.

Airbus noted that this long-term order would aid Vietjet's international expansion efforts by increasing flights on high-capacity routes across Asia-Pacific and potentially introducing new services to Europe. Thao commented that modern Airbus aircraft have supported Vietjet’s growth and will continue to do so as the airline expands globally.

Benoît de Saint-Exupéry from Airbus highlighted Vietjet as one of the fastest-growing airlines globally. “We are proud that the carrier has selected the A330neo as its widebody aircraft of choice,” he said.

Vietjet now has 40 A330-900s and 96 A320neo family aircraft on order. According to ch-aviation records, Vietjet operates a fleet alongside Thai Vietjet totaling various models including A320ceo, A321ceo, A321neo, A330-300, and COMAC C909 aircraft leased from Chengdu Airlines. Additionally, they await delivery of 200 Boeing 737 MAX 8 planes.

In May alone, data from Cirium's Diio Mi tool showed that Vietjet scheduled 74 weekly departures using its A330-300s from Vietnam to various domestic and international destinations including Delhi Indira Gandhi International Airport (DEL), Melbourne Airport (MEL), Sydney Airport (SYD), among others.

However, legal issues loom as Vietjet faces a ruling by UK courts mandating payment of $181.5 million debt to FitzWalter Capital. The airline warns this could threaten its operational viability according to Bloomberg reports. As per financial statements ending December 31st, 2024, Vietjet had VND 4.5 trillion ($175.8 million) in cash equivalents.
