FedEx has announced a contract with Neste, a leading producer of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) and renewable diesel. The agreement secures over three million gallons of blended SAF for FedEx at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX). This blend includes at least 30% neat SAF, known as Neste MY SAF. The fuel will account for approximately one-fifth of the jet fuel used by FedEx annually at LAX, marking the largest SAF purchase by a U.S. cargo airline at this airport. Deliveries began earlier this month and will continue over the next year.

Karen Brinks Ellis, Chief Sustainability Officer and Vice President of Environmental Affairs at FedEx, stated: "The procurement of SAF is a critical component of our emissions reduction strategy in aviation over the coming years, and we are pleased to have entered into an agreement with Neste to begin using this fuel in our aviation operations. Our global aviation network represents the largest portion of our overall fuel usage, making this initiative our greatest opportunity for emissions reduction. As we work towards achieving carbon-neutral operations by 2040, it is essential that the SAF market continues to grow to meet industry demand."

Richard Smith, COO of FedEx Express and CEO of its airline division, commented: "As a world-leading express transportation company, this initial introduction of SAF in the U.S. advances our sustainability goals while strengthening efforts across the aviation industry to procure and use more SAF. While recognizing that further growth in the SAF market is needed alongside other new technologies, we are proud to reach this milestone."

Carl Nyberg, Senior Vice President, Commercial, Renewable Products at Neste said: "Neste is pleased to collaborate with FedEx to support their ambitious goal of achieving carbon-neutral operations by 2040 through our SAF. Considering air cargo's vital role in the global economy, FedEx demonstrates how utilizing low-emission solutions like SAF can reduce environmental impact. We look forward to strengthening our collaboration further."

This fuel purchase builds on FedEx's long-standing commitment to innovative sustainable aviation technology alongside other industry leaders. In addition to procuring SAF, FedEx aims to improve efficiency and reduce fuel consumption across its aviation operations through fleet modernization, fuel-saving initiatives, and flight plan optimization. These comprehensive efforts resulted in a 30% reduction in aircraft emissions intensity from 2005 levels during fiscal year 2024.

Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) serves as a more sustainable alternative to traditional fossil-based jet fuels due primarily to lower emissions from feedstock used in production processes. Neat SAF is mixed with conventional jet fuel before use and is considered a "drop-in" solution compatible with existing aircraft engines and fueling infrastructure without modifications.

Neste MY SAF can reduce greenhouse gas emissions by up to 80% over its lifecycle compared to conventional jet fuels when calculated using established lifecycle assessment methods such as CORSIA.

While production of SAF continues expanding globally and within the United States, it accounted for less than 1% of total jet fuel production worldwide in 2024. As all airlines seek improved access and supply for alternative fuels like SAFs going forward—FedEx remains committed both environmentally & economically promoting these benefits along with driving increased production expansion.
